Greece-Egypt ferry
Calling all travelers,
I'm trying to get from Greece to Egypt by ferry. It seems like the only line doing that run has cancelled it's service until further notice. Does this mean I'll have to go the long way round? (no pun intended). If I have to go through Turkey, can anybody tell me the best ferry to catch from Greece to get me closer to Turkeys southern borders? I've looked about on the net, but info is patchy for travel in the off season. Thanks!

Greetings from sunny Italy,
I have also investigated on the net but there is no ferry service between Greece and Egypt, if you are in Greece you can reach the following islnds very close to Turkey, Chios, Kos, Samos, Lesvos, I do not know if you have still to pay a tax in Greece when leaving for Turkey, if you arrive to Kos you will have to follow the coastal road till the border more than 1000 Km, an alternative shold be Athens - Alexandropolis by ferry traveling in the night, you are very close to the border and you arrive to Ankara, next day Cappadoocia (worth of a visit) and from Cappadocia to Syrian border 600 Km about. The choice is yours :-)

Not in the middle of winter on a bike! Stick to the coast. Note that the Chios ferry apparently runs all year (but not every day), but some of the other ferries to TR may not run during winter.
If you don't intend to travel to any Arab countries you should be able to go via Cyprus and Israel. There is a recent thread in this very forum on ferries. Rosenfeld is the name of the shipping co.
If you do want to visit Syria or other Arab countries you must not go through Israel. Search the HUBB for tips on how to get to Egypt from Jordan via ferry (Aqaba).
You do have a carnet valid for Egypt, don't you?

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
