How to get the bikes to Whitehorse (Canada)?
Hello!
Does anybody know how we can get our 2 XT600E from Germany to Whitehorse in Canada for a fair price? We want to start our travel there at the end of may 2009. North-Amerika to Argentina.
Condor is offering cheap flights for us, but they don´t carry motorbikes there.
By a cargo agent ( In Time Forwarding & Courier) I was told, the planes, going to Whitehorse, have too small cargo-doors for a motorbike - only about 60cm high. He only saw the possibility to ship the bikes to Vancouver and transport them up to Whitehorse by truck for about 2000,- Euro each! - I hope he isn´t right!
I can´t imagine there is no bigger cargo for Whitehorse than 60cm!
Why Whitehorse?
Starting from Anchorage seems to be too complicated, because of the visa. - We don´t want to hurry to get to Mexico. And starting in Vancouver contains driving north and back again, for to have been in the wild.
I´m hoping anybody has got experience in that field!
Regards
Arno

Hey Arno,
I would consider riding up. The ride through BC is a great combination of scenery and low population and you can easily plan a trip up that is different than the one back. That would be my first choice and I'd be happy to recommend some routes.
If you really don't want to ride, consider the ferry to Alaska. Many people take it up or back and it has it's own advantages (Inside Passage, etc.).
You can truck it north, or at least part way north. There are a lot of backhauls going quite inexpensive, at least to Prince George but I can expect that it is hard to organize that from Germany. The further north you go, the harder it gets as there is less population and the less traffic.
Enjoy the ride.

Thanks to MountainMan and the Villa Kunterbunt!
We decided to organize some visa for the USA and start our trip in Anchorage. So this thread can be closed.
Best wishes from Arno

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
