Import UK england price tax duty motorbike customs

For anyone interested in importing a bike into the uk (like me), i have recently (11.2006) found out from a uk customs man that 25% of the current value of the bike AND 25% of the cost spent shipping the bike, are charged as a seperate fee to her majesty... payable in the port/airport where it arrives. apparently you should watch out for the shipping company ´including´ these fees -sometimes they don´t pay them at the far end, so you end up paying twice.

this is a slightly generous figure, which he said he normally recommends people work by, so as not to feel shafted later on. it is the summary of the 6% duty and 17.5% VAT that are charged. it makes no difference where the bike is registered at the time of shipping.

umm... thats it. happy research.

If the bike is registered in the EU, there is no import duty liability.
Even if you buy a new bike. You can buy it ex-vat in the EU country of origin and pay the vat on import/registration in the UK.

You mus mean importing from "the rest of the world"

Nope.

I think the 6 month thing is for people going to another EU country with the specific intention of buying a new bike/car. You can buy a bike, free of tax in say, Germany. You must then export it within 6 months (or stump up the taxes). If you then take it to the UK, (after 5 months), its liable to VAT because you dont have a VAT paid receipt.

The requirement is that tax must have been paid to an EU state to be free of tax in another EU country.

If you import from the US, the chancelor would not have had his pound of flesh so at a minimum, it's liable to VAT.

I don't know if there's an age at which tax is not liable.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
