RoRo or container + wharf costs?

Singapore to Chennai RoRo: US$1000. (6m long van)

OR

KL to Chennai by container US$750

what is wisdom? I'm having trouble getting accurate info re getting van off the wharf (RoRo) versus clearing container in Chennai (most ship in opposite direction) - would it be safe to assume that RoRo would be cheaper/easier to get off the wharf? by how much?

Vehicle has a secure cargo area, ie I'm comfortable handing someone the keys to drive it on/off. Any advice appreciated!

Kai

From my experience in 2006 :

A shared container (3 motorcycles) cost 400 Euros per motorcycle + 300 Euros clearance fees from Portugal to Argentina. It took a few days in Portugal and a whole week in B.AS for papers. A one way ticket to B.As taken one month before cost 600 Euros. The most unpleasant part was the stress to deal with the argentine administration (very uncooperative).

So roughly the cost was 1300 Euros traveller + vehicule + 30 Euros/day x 15 days for the time dealing with papers. About 1800 Euros.

From what I read going on a boat would have cost 1900 Euros+300 for the motorcycle : 2200 Euros.

From that experience, costs are fairly similar (about 2000 EUros). The choice was more between spending one month in a boat and dealing with the boredom or shipping in cargo and dealing with the administrative stress.

It seems cheaper to buy a motorcycle and sell it back in India than bringing your own, which is not the case in South America, due to complicated regulations and high taxes.

Europeans with their own vehicule usually got there onland (Silk Road). It s actually rare to ship a vehicule to India.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
