Russia to Japan

Anyone know if it's possible to take a boat (cargo or otherwise) from Vladiviostok to Japan?

Hi Cynthia,
There is a regular ferry from Vladivostok to Japan, I think to Niigata, if I'm not mistaken.

Cynthia, there is info in the shipping info pages. A search for Vladivostok comes up with a number of travellers who have done what you are enquiring about.
cheers alec

By chance I found an business card from the ferry company when searching my stuff on the weekend, so if you drop me an e-mail I can send the details to you.
FYI last year there was two ferries (one company) sailing each week (Wed and Sat I think) One landed in Tayoma and the other in the city listed in the message above. I understand that the ferry to Niigata was a RoRo, the Tayoma ferry that we took was an old passanger liner and the bikes where winched on winched off.
The company had a web site, but the information was hopless out of date (that was last year). A link to the company's page is somewhere on the site as I recall.
Cheers

There is a schedule for this year here:
http://www.euras.co.jp/en/
Just go to the ferry terminal next to the Vladivostok train station.

For more info on Japan, http://www2.gol.com/users/chrisl/japan/

But Brett is the guy to talk to about customs (and headaches) in Vladivostok!
If you have a carnet and read the info on the website above Japan is no problem at all!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
