Shipping and Permanent Import to the USA
Hi all,
Long story short: I bought a BMW F650 Dakar in South Africa, registered it in Zambia, am riding it to Ethiopia, and want to ship it back to the USA where I am a citizen...am I in trouble or what?
I've looked at your shipping Co's, but haven't seen anybody who boasts of the Africa/USA leg, and frankly, that's only one of my concerns...for example, will the USA allow me to import a European model bike/what will it take to make it US compliant?
So, anyone have an idea of how much time and money it'll take to get this job done...or...anybody wanna buy a Dakar?

Hunter,
I think you'll find that you can register your bike in Oregon - they have no emissions regs etc - good luck...

Mike, all.
Actually, I posted this query ages ago, and have since learned that it is virtually impossible to import my Dakar to the US, regardless of the state to which I want to send it.
The US DOT and EPA both have rules restricting recent model European spec bikes from entering the USA. I have to use a registered importer who charges an arm and a leg for the service, and modifications estimated in the thousands of dollars have to be made to my bike before it's US compliant. I've contacted Stateside BMW bike clubs for help, plus BMW/USA, and have had my old man call registered importers. All have the same bad news.
This is absurd of course, since Euro standards couldn't be significantly different than US ones, and it's a motorcycle that gets a gazillion miles to the gallon (not like a US SUV or anything...), but alas.
I've given up. I'm gonna sell my baby. See the used bikes link on this page if you wanna buy it.
