My gut feeling is that it won't be worth importing a standard bike to the UK because here it is a buyers market and it will stay like that for some time to come;- eBay: sv1000
On UK Ebay you can pick up any amount of SV1000s for about £3000, for instance.
On the other hand, if it is a bike that you love and cherish then fair enough.
The same would apply to track bikes - try your own search in ebay, they are always available.
Bringing such a bike from left hand drive Oz to LHD UK is one thing ----
As for France, there is a 100BHP limit there - has been for years - and a bureaucracy above and beyond that of the UK. For that reason, there are loads of Brits living in France who are riding and driving around France with UK registered vehicles; read into various threads in here and you will get the general idea.
Also worth reading are the sticky threads in Trip Paperwork about insurance for bikes in Europe/UK.
