Shipping a car from Melbourne to Cape Town or Durban
Hey guys,
Can anyone recommend a cheap way of transporting a vehicle (car, not bike) from Melbourne to South Africa?
Any contacts and/or indication of costs involved would be very gratefully received. I'd be looking to transport the vehicle around September/October 2010.
Cheers!
Jeanie

That will be a difficult route - there is next to no direct traffic from Australia to South Africa for RoRo or containers. The route will be Melbourne to Singapore - trans ship in Singapore for an East Coast African ship maybe via India or the Gulf States - maybe trans ship in the Gulf as well.
Any competent shipping company in Melbourne can help - Yellow Pages for a lot of quotes. I'd have expected a US$4,500 to US$5,500 mark - but dont hold me too that.
You may not get a quote to cover port/stevedores charges in SA as this is usually paid by you on retrieving the vehicle in local currency. You need to get some idea of this - as some shippers get really stuck into you on port charges - it can make the cheapest quote the most expensive.

Try these guys,, they were very helpful and good to deal with. I shipped a bike from Melb to KL with them but they may be able to help with a car.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
