Shipping contact needed for Belawan - Pengang

Hi folks,

I am looking for a shipping contact from Belawan to Penang. Most people go the other way and used Mr Lim, but he is in Penang...

How frequently does the boat go?

Cheers,
Frank

I have contacted Mr Lim and he told me that the boat leaves once a week from Belawan to Penang. Probably Tuesdays. Charges are RM370 on Malaysia side.
Charges in Belawan depend on the agent.

Does anyone have a contact in Belawan? My visa runs out soon and I still have a long way to Medan...

Cheers,
Frank

Hi Margus,

Thank you for the link. It seems like they always charge around 1 Mio rp in Belawan plus 370 MYR

Thats about $240.00 not cheap for this short hop!

Reply from Mr Lim:

There is a boat leaving Belawan to Penang once a week, (likely on every Tuesday)

Charges (including freight) in Penang is RM 370.00.

Belawan charges unknown, it depends on Agent in Belawan.

2nd reply:
You have to pay charges (port charges, documentation charges and etc) to this shipping agen in Belawan.
Rp 900,000 +-.
The address : PT MELDA JAYA
JL. BANGKA TIMUR
NO. 49, BELAWAN, INDONISIA.
TEL NO: 77671410

I would highly appreciate If anybody knows a cheaper alternative.

I went to the shipping agent in Belawan sent by Mr Lim. A very unsympatic guy called Anan showed up and wanted to charge me 1 Mio rupiah. I did not accept and went to the customs office.
The customs people were very helpful and found out when and where the boat was leaving.
I did not use an agent in Belawan and paid nothing there, however when collecting my bike in Penang Mr Lim wanted to charge me RM 890! ($290)
After some discussion he went down to RM 680 ($220).

PENANG to MEDAN on a motorbike with no CARNET POSSIBLE???

Hi there to all and
everyone who have done this before:

PENANG (Malaysia) to BELAWAN-MEDAN (Indonesia), what happens if one is shipping his bike without a CARNET de PASSAGE?

We are riding a motorbike with a Thai registr. plate. Unfortunately the Thai Government or any other Automobile Club of Thailand DOES NOT release any CARNET, reason being that apparently there has never been anyone who has wanted to drive or ride any vehicle with a Thai plate into Indonesia....and therefore they do not even seem to know what a CARNET is.
What they do know is a ATA Carnet, which is usually a document that is being issued by the Thai authority if one wants to go exhibit goods etc... temporarily in another Country.

This is what the Automobile Club of Thailand told us.

We find this veryyyy strange but if true we are really struggling to understand and arrange procedures to get our motorbike onto Indonesian ground.

Does anyone know what we can do about it?

Looking forward to get your information.

Best to all.

I went that way 4 years ago, and Cakra Shipping certainly insisted, that all vehicles that they ship over to Indo, have carnets. We had one, so don´t know, what they would´ve said if we didn´t... and even if they agreed to ship it, getting it through customs in Belawan could be yet another story.

There was a guy on gt rider dot com, who made a travel report from Sumatra, and he got his Thai-plated Africa Twin into Indonesia without a carnet... but this did not happen without a long and thorough test of patience with the customs! And this was many years ago, the customs could be tighter now.

Penang to Belawan is a common route these days, so they may be well aware of the regulations there (... but at any other point of entry they could be very erratic, as evidenced by travellers that I met, who had had BIG problems to get their bikes into Indo, even though they HAD carnets!)
