Shipping santiago to australia

Hello All
I am an Australian just about to ship my Australian registered motorbike back to Sydney Australia after a one year trip around south America. The company I will use in Valparaiso Chile is Villakunterbunt well known on Horizions.
I am looking for information and advice about getting my bike from the shipping company and through customs etc in Australia so if any one out there has done this, or Knows anything about the procedure and costs it would be much appreciated
regards
Michael.

Hi Michael,
I have shipped my Australian bike several times into Australia from the U.S. I found that the the two most important items were the Vehicle import approval and make sure the bike is spotless. If you have not done a vehicle import approval they are available thought the Dept. of Infrastructure and Transport and costs $50.
As far as cleaning the bike the goes, take great care in making sure everything is clean including any gear you send back with the bike.
Good luck and let me know if I can be of any help.
Jeffrey

Hello Jeff
Thanks for the info just a few questions.
This Vehicle import approval is it something that I would acquire once I arrive back in Oz and then fill out, or is it something that I should get before the bike leaves South America.
Once your bike arrived back in Oz did you then deal with the shipping company and customs yourself or did some agent on this side have to act on your behalf.
Thanks
Michael.

Hi Michael,
I have always filled out the vehicle importation application before I left the country as it does take awhile to get the application back. The first time I sent my bike back I tried to do it myself but found it to be too much of an effort dealing with the government so I found a customers broker that was able to sort everything out for me. Ever since I have used a broker or shipping agents specializing in vehicle importing.
Good Luck and keep us posted.
Jeffrey

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
