I have not done specifically that, but in January 2008, I sent my bike from Chennai to Bangkok, and a few months later from Bali Indonesia to Perth. Both transports were done by air. I did ask for seafreight as well, but at least from India to Thailand, the prices quoted were roughly the same for air and sea transport, so that made my decision very easy! And at that time, there was also talk of some sort of “slow-down strikes” at Chennai seaport, so nobody seemed to have a clue, if it would have taken 2 weeks or 2 months to send by sea!

Do note, however, that while sending from India is totally possible, it is a lot of work. I remember thinking, that I spent about 1 working week in Chennai “fully employed” just to get everything arranged. The bike was flown on an open crate, and we needed a “non-objection certificate” from the high police commissioner in Chennai. And also the freight agent could not handle all customs stuff (probably were not certified to do the Dangerous Goods certificate), so there was another customs agent, and I was shuffling between those places on an autorickshaw many many times!

But if you take it as an experience in itself, then surely it is do-able. Though I do not have personal experience, I would personally be a bit suspicious about seafreight out of India, especially how long it is gonna take in reality. And even by air, the bureaucracy over there was a bit of a handful. Good luck!

We also did air freight from chennai to bangkok earlier this year using Govias for the agent. We did spend a good week going thru the motions but no extra agent to deal with. It was pricey but it's India. All doable, just a lot of waiting.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
