UK Import Tax on Motorcycle bought in Australia ?
Hi,
Does anybody know the import tax and legal requirements that would be applied to an Australian bought Motorcycle if I brought it back to the UK after a trip.
Thanks in advance for your comments.
Regards,
Mike Giles

I had to pay 200 quid for my Aussie registered bike yesterday to clear customs as a temporary import. I don't know what you would pay to import permanently.

Check www.hmrc.gov.uk
This is the website I used when I had my bike in the UK as a temporary import - I think it also covers permanent imports.

UK Import Tax and Duty
Hi There,
I work for a freight company but am not tauting for business, but will be happy to assist if required. Duty and VAt is payable on any bike purchased out of the EU. The following rates apply:
Duty - up to 250cc - 8%
Duty - over 250cc - 6%
VAT - 17.5% paid on the value of the bike + freight amount + duty paid to customs.
Once the bike has cleared customs whoever has cleared the bike needs to fax a copy of the import entry to the customs 'car team' who will then issue a C+E386 form which is required along with the title to register the bike in the UK.
If the bike is over 25 years old then it's duty free and only 5% VAT.
When I tell people this they are sometimes shocked that they have to pay the duty and VAT on arrival into the UK from outside the EU as they have 'been told' that this is not the case. This is usually from the seller who is trying to make a sale!
Hope this has been helpful.
