Uk to Australia vintage motorbike
Hi,
My dad is wanting to bring his 1909 Truimph motorbike over to Australia when he comes and visits me for a vintage rally.
I’ve looked and read on this site and I think air freight would be best but now I’m stuck and don’t know where to start.
If anyone could recommend any companies?
I was also wondering about quarantine and also import tax. If anyone knows anything about this please let me know.
Thanks

Re transporting it, you could probably do worse than contacting one of the specialist companies that advertise here - https://www.jamescargo.com/motorcycles/ for example.
Re import requirements, I'm no expert but the UK government web page on the subject - https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicle...porary-imports suggests you should be able to bring it as a temporary import without any problems. As far as I'm aware 'quarantine' will only be an issue on the way back. Any transport company that gets your business should be able to advise you on what regulations apply though.
I've just come back from a two day vintage rally https://www.kophillclimb.org.uk and there were a number of similar age bikes both on display and being ridden. It's amazing how much stuff - cars and bikes - that people keep in sheds etc and only bring out for events like this. Whatever event your father brings it over for there's usually a furthest travelled award. My guess would be that Australia might take some beating. : Thumbup1:

It will need to be spotlessly clean for quarantine and might need a carnet de passage for temporary importation unless there are exceptions for vintage vehicles, the shipping company should be able to advise. on at least some of this

Shipping: Best to start on the shipping page How to Ship Your Bike | Horizons Unlimited
Read through that and follow the links on it for more detail. Has at least one firm advertising on it.
Quarantine: Being an Ozie you'll know how we are on bugs going in from os. So the bike needs to be at least concourse clean. They can look anywhere - inside the air cleaner, under mudguards, in the tool box, under the battery tray. If it is not clean then they will charge to steam clean it .. and charge to dispose of the waste generated by the steam cleaning... $$$. Clean means free of dirt and seeds and plant matter. Oil and grease, if clean, won't worry them.
Import: Temporary
Temporary will mean a carnet. Read through Paperwork | Horizons Unlimited
and then Carnet links | Horizons Unlimited
Before he leaves:
Umm re-entry into the UK ... he'll need something to say the bike is not being imported .. so best to have some document to say it left the UK.. talk to the UK customs guys to find out what they want ... before he leaves.
Carnet - as above.
Clean - as above.
Ask him to bring a little rain

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
