I got me a Sprint RS

Just done a deal on a sprint RS

I intend to get used to the machine and then go to France to visit the war graves of our glorious dead.

Anything I need to know about the machine? She has 16000 miles on and in mint condition. Lucifer Orange

In my case option b.
I have a BMW and a GoldWIng. Had a lot of other bikes but never a Triumph.

This has happened before here about Triumphs. Not many adventure travellers on Triumphs I guess. I've owned two Tigers so I know the RS, even rode one at a Triumph press intro some years ago. 2000? 2001?

I believer the RS got the "budget" treatment from Triumph but is still a good bike. Needs perhaps a bit of suspension work to match the ST. But I think it could be transformed into a nice comfy sports tourer if you know what you're doing. Its got the motor and its cheap to run and pretty reliable.

Good basic bike. Better than a LOT of other bikes, tons of character.

Re: your trip
I'm not sure if you meant WWI or WWII but if you are in Northern France a visit across to Ieper/Ypres in Belgium and Tyne Cot cemetery nearby is (for me) a must.

8pm every night at the Menin Gate for a reminder of what sacrifice means. The Cloth Hall is also worth seeing as an amazing example of post-war renovation.

I can't answer your question about your bike, but it will be more than adequate for Europe and beyond. I ride a Triumph Trophy (1200) and have travelled in Europe on it many times, no problems 100% reliable. Robbie Marshall (RIP) went round the world on a Trophy 1200. Just check the service history etc, and as someone else mentioned, try a Triumph/Sprint specific site (Google?) for more detailed info;o) France is a good place to start continental riding, good roads, food, accomodation and if you have never been before (on a bike) very biker friendly;o) I can't help with the WW sites either, as it is not my thing!

hi pheobelala i got a 955i ST, so same bike as yours virtually. this is a long one so dont say you never get any replies!!

if you get oil mist on your left boot you probably have a crankcase breather leak and you need to replace the crappy wire clip on the bottom of the hose with a proper british jubilee clip, not a catastrophe but do it before you lose any more of that very expensive mobil1. (this is a fine MIST, anything more and have a look, NOW)

you may notice your left leg gets pretty warm. hot even, although without fairing lowers you might not get this. this is normal, "they all do that, sir". it means the rad is doing its job.

if you only got one headlight on dipped beam and one light on full then buy two of the correct relays and put them back in where triumph took them out. this will give you both lights on all the time like it was designed to be, up yours brussells.

if you find the clutch lever span is too far then get a dogleg lever from a bonneville or a whole lever and clamp from a kawasaki sports bike, both cheaper than the dogleg lever from triumph.

get a rear hugger, that shock is fragile and expensive.

get a fender extenda, because so is you oil cooler.

when you get back check your headrace bearings, they are specially designed by triumph to shag up just when the warranty runs out so after 16000mi i hope your top set has already been replaced with honda tapered bearings.

scottoilers work very well on these bikes, they have a lot of torque and are hard on chains and tyres. BT020s are excellent all round tyres, azaro STs are good too. go for a dual compound for good motorway miles. when adjusting your chain make sure your wheels are aligned properly.

ENJOY YOURSELF!!! these bikes are perfect for french roads, especially if you have the little union flag stickers on the seat unit. join T595net - The independent site for Triumph owners forum for loads of great honest tips and advice, and also the triumphUS run WWW.TRIUMPHRAT.NET for accessories and reviews

if you go to tyne cot say hi to my great uncle, private benton madeley of the kings liverpool regt, hes one of the ones named up on the dais because they couldnt find enough of him to have his own grave, along with thousands of his mates. etaples has a lovely cemetary too and there are some good ones around the belgian village of passendale, especially the irish tower. its good to see the locals treat the cemetaries with great respect and care, they are immaculate.

Many thanx for that detailed info Dave, i will check it all out. including the french bits.

I will need a new battery as mine is shagged, also when i turn on the ign it (the bike) makes a noise like a feeble horn for a coupla seconds. Will look at thge triumph specific sites

The noise you hear when the ignition is switched on is the fuel pump. Triumph replaced them under warranty when the bikes were new. It MAY be solved by removing the pump and rotating it. I ran an S3 for months with a noisy pump - it did eventually get worse.

my fuel pump has made a 'whirring' noise on switch on from day one, its just the pump priming with fuel before starting. most fuel injected bikes do it, im told. my mates BMW sounds like Robocop going for a walk!

actually this neatly makes me remember something about the fuel pump. if you run the bike dry (so you actually run out of fuel) theres a risk the fuel pump wont prime properly again, and get a big airlock in it. i got used to seeing the fuel light on the dash and ran out once (i be a nugget). mine was fine afterwards but never say never! dont ignore the fuel light, you probably have 5ltrs left when it comes on, like mine, but it should say in your handbook. (i think the RS has the digital dash from the daytona so you might not have an actual light but you get the picture. you might even have a picture of someone pushing a heavy bike through lashing rain to the nearest petrol station 10mi away)

and now my headlight bulb has gone.
im going to try to replace them both without taking the whole front end apart like messrs triumph and haynes say you do, i think i can just about do it if im prepared to lose most of the skin on my hands.

another thing the RS is better for!

Hope this works for you Dave.

I have replaced both headlights on my Trophy 12 and have had to remove the full fairing in order to get enough grip to reseat the twist retainer that holds the bulbs in place.

no way, had to strip the whole fairings off my bike. what a rubbish design, nearly two hours to change a bulb.

Sorry to hear that

I guess its to late now howeveer the next time mine go I am going to install a set of LED headlights.

On my Trophy I think the fairing causes a build up of heat so that after riding any distance above 30 degrees celsius I know that I will lose at least one bulb.

Live and learn.

And to Phoebelala, how is the sprint, are you having any fun with it yet?

I just Got my 01 RS 2 days ago. I Have heard many owners reccommend a center stand if you don't already have one.
