The plot thickens..
Yep, I've seen the thread.. The background on whats going on elsewhere is that we have a draft MySQL database schema in place that supports a lot of the ideas that have been discussed on the HUBB (including the ability for people to enter GPS positions, routes, etc). The plan now is to put a Drupal (based on PHP) web frontend on it, and expose it somewhere within the HU website (probably first on the dev website).. This is the harder bit, from what I can see (but then I say that because database development is my bread and butter, but web development isn't).
In the discussions that we've had, Grant has ruled out Google Earth for one simple reason: you need to have it installed on the pc, which is not very compatible with travellers using under-specced pcs in internet cafes all over the world. The alternative is a web based approach, with nothing to be installed on the pc (other than the usual browser, and perhaps Javascript). This might use something like yahoo maps, google maps, or some other map provider.
If you have some free time on your hands, and can help with the development (MySQL/PHP/Drupal/JavaScript), I suggest having a word with Grant & jefff8.. Help is always welcome..
On the database to Google Earth conversion.. I just did version 0.1 of that tonight in order to have a look at some of our test data in Google Earth.. (using CSV file export/import).. I didn't see this db->Google Earth bit as a core part of the app (I did it more to satisfy my curiosity), but if you write a nice conversion from the database to GPX/KML/whatever, that should definitely be usable to us somewhere.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
