Strange Beta!!

Why are we back to a narrow 14" screen layout and no option to select Unread or "New since last" ??

I hoped our troubles since last change were over, even when I never egained the ability to save my Unread option in the cookie.

It's easier to read is the answer - a very wide screen with a completely fluid width is terrible to read. A sentence the whole width of a 24" screen really sucks. But it's much easier to read when it's more like a book. And newspapers have always been narrow columns for a reason - it's easier to read. I have three monitors on my system, all running at once - one 19" in portrait at 1024x1280, one 19" at 1280 x 1024, and a 24" at 1920x1080. Guess which one I READ on - for most stuff, especially wide pages - the portrait monitor - WAY better than the 24" unless I narrow the window.

On our design, we have tried to combine easy to read and deal with big pictures - if the pictures are too wide, the layout accommodates that and goes as wide as needed. So hopefully the best of both worlds.

We ARE carefully looking at the whole issue of width - it's been VERY much discussed with MANY experts and users, and a seriously thought about issue. Nothing is final - we'll see.

See the "New Posts" button in the blue bar below the "Welcome..." box. Still there, unchanged. (when logged in only)

I have NO idea how you did that - unless you're talking about the automatic way it does that. I clearly don't know everything that can be done, there's just way too much to ever know it all well, but be assured it was never "removed". The software that runs the HUBB - vBulletin - has been upgraded several times in the last three years, and there are definitely some things they removed - not me - and also added a lot.

If you can tell me EXACTLY how you saved unread I'll see what I can find out.

NOTE that it should do that automatically - it certainly does for me and on several browsers I have tried. You do have to login for it to work though. Perhaps try logging in and OUT to clear the cookie, then back in to start a fresh one and see what happens.

You can also use the Quick Links to Mark (ALL) Forums Read, and in a forum the Forum Tools to mark that forum read.

Hope that helps!

1. Width. If the page adapts to screenwidth, people can just change their window away from fullscreen, then they adjust the size as they want, not just a prescribed size.

2. The old board had several options, I remember "New since last" and "new in last 24h"

I must admit that I'm very much against the new trend of engineers, designers trying to guess what users want and then dictate their guesses instead of leaving the choice to the users.

As I said, much discussed and debated!

It's been a long time. I think version 3.5 was the last that had that. I have a complete standard installation of vB for testing, and it doesn't have those options anywhere, so I'm afraid they've taken it away. Note that the default installation only gives "New Posts" which is posts in the last 24 hours - and that's it. I've hacked the code and added the nice dropdown that gives a list of choices under "New Posts", so you can have 15 minutes, last day, or weeks!

I sympathize - there's lots of things I have to fight with that you don't see, some improvements, some not. I still kinda like DOS 3.1 too!

As a website admin, I try very hard to balance what I hear users wanting, what I have time for, what's possible, and what's financially possible - and it's not easy! We do our best.

Heureka!!

After I click my bookmark I always have to click "New posts" " Get all new posts" to get all the unreads but I just noticed, that for a short moment after "Get all new posts" , there is a page, before the final page comes and if I bookmark THAT page, the next time I click the bookmark, I only have to click ONCE and all my unread threads are shown :-)

This is the page I bookmarked: The HUBB - The HUBB

Well spotted!

The bokmark you were using is a RESULTS page, NOT the query itself.

When you can't get the url of the query page, or it's not displayed as is often the case:
To find the actual query on any page similar, right click the link and "Copy Link Location" in FF and similar in other browsers. Create a shortcut and paste that link in and you're good to go.

For months, every time I came on the site to check posts I went through that silly routine of clicking "new posts," then choosing one hour, four hours, twelve hours..... Each time, I thought of posting to ask whether there was a better way, but I always concluded it wasn't worth my time or Grant's.

After all that hemming and hawing without taking definitive action, pbekkerh solved it for me. Thanks!

Mark

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
