G'day from Australia

Hey - We're Harry (36M) and Liss (30F) and we're in the early stages of planning a 9-12 mo. Lon-Syd ride starting Aug 2020. We've been lurking in the shadows of the HUBB for so long so thought we should actually start getting involved.

We're currently in Sydney, and spending as much time as possible trying to find good on and offroad routes in New South Wales to build up my skills for the big trip (we've heard West Africa has some particularly rugged main roads).

Planning to keep track of our progress on Youtube so we have something to look back on. At the minute it's mostly Liss being a learner and falling over a lot, and Harry riding bikes that explode. We're riding a Royal Enfield Himalayan and a DR650 at the moment, but we'll swap out the Himalayan for a matching Suzuki by the time we set off.

Loads of questions we're trying to work out at the moment, like:
-Where to ride in Australia pre-trip,
-What gear to travel with,
-To camp or not to camp,
-Can we actually cross West to East Africa without taking a year on its own, or packing onto a plan at some point?
-Travelling with a drone (scare stories from Iran),
-Not-to-miss places in Europe,

See you in the boards and on the road!

Hi Guys and welcome

On the Africa question I think that you can cross from west to east from anywhere from Angola down. Some people have found Angolan visas a problem. Most people go north to south or vice versa or north to south across South Africa then back up.

Good luck with the planning

Thanks for the welcome!

Yeah, that's our fear. If we go all the way to Angola it feels like it will take a year just to travel Morocco to Egypt. I guess we have 12 months for Chad to suddenly become a biker haven...or fly Nigeria to Sudan.

On the one hand, it seems such a shame to do Africa and not visit the south, but the place is so huge! Things to think about.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
