Hello! Alex from Germany, I started rtw two months ago...

Hello to everybody!

I'm quite new with travelling on two wheels, and try introduce myself shortly.

I'm Alex, 28 years old and originally from the west of Germany, from a small town called "Bitburg".
After my study and two years of working as an mechanical engineer I asked myself the question: "So this will be my live till I'm 65, maybe a succesfull career including, and then - with 65 - I can say: Now I'm free and can do what I want?" So I changed my point of view and told myself: "NO, right now I'm able to do what I want!" So I quit my job in 2011 and bought me a BMW F 650 GS Dakar and travelled across Europe for 4 months during summer last year.
I really enjoyed that kind of living and travelling, so in March 2012 I started to a longer trip without any limit, but I'm a little afraid, as well, to be honest...

I passed Austria, Slovakia, a little bit of Hungary and then passed the Alpes back into Italy and want to ride along the Adriatic coast through the former-Jugoslawian countries into Greece (want to join the 1st HU meeting in July!!!) and Turkey and then further into South-East direction...

On my way I want to work if possible, because of quiting my job and without a lot of savings I'm running on very low money. I'm a mechanic for agricultural machines. So tractors, combines and so on... And good operator of them (at least I think) , as well.

Due to the fact, that I'm very new at HU, I feel a little bit lost in who to contact or where to write my questions. I want to meet some other travellers, who maybe already have a lot of experience and learn a little bit from them about living on the road.
My biggest concern at the moment is money, but I guess this is normal (?) when you start into such a for me totally new life-style. And returning back is the absolutly every last option....
So I'm very interested about some advices how, most of you long-time-traveller, handle especially the point of fining work along the road!?

I'm looking forward to meet a lot of you on my way from Germany to Turkey and further into South-East Asia. I will appreciate any kind of offer and help very much! Just a small talk at a coffee or a meeting somewhere or or ....

Thanks in advance!

Alex

Welcome Alex! I spent a little time in Bitburg right around the time you were born. If you ever make it to Arizona look me up. We would have to look hard to find a decent here but the scenery is amazing. Have fun and be safe. Most of us wish we would have had the presence of mind to do what you are doing at a young age rather than near retirement. -Paul

Hi Paul!

You haven't been to the Air Force, while staying at Biturg and Spangdahlem??

I've been to AZ in '08 and '09 but was most interested in doing my job that time...
I really want to come to the US again. My dream is work in the US for several months to earn money and then move to the south and do Panamericana...

Thanks for your offer!

Ciao Alex

Alex, I was never on the military bases near Bitburg. I worked nearby military bases tasting the beverages. It was a tough job but someone had to do it. LOL But, that was a lifetime ago. Now I only get to visit every few years. Viel spass mit deinem abenteuer, Paul

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
