My suggestions for what they’re worth.
Get the ferry to Spain this September and spend 3 weeks travelling around taking in the Picos, Pyrenees, Cuenca Mountains, Rhonda and extramadura - camping all the way.
Next summer ride down through the Balkans to Greece and back - can be done in 3/4 weeks in comfort - camp in the expensive countries and hotel in the cheap ones.
2021 a trip to Morocco - as Tim Cullis says it’s a cold country with a hot sun so don’t go in winter, even in april it’s very very cold at night and it’s snowing in the high Atlas - it was the year we were there. Do lots of research so you have a great trip. It can be done in 2 weeks but 4 would be a perfect preparation.
September 2022 ship your bike to South America and ride around for 9-12 months.
Whatever you decide don’t forget to post up your ride report.

Cheers for the input. Sounds like a solid plan! It's a real shame about the stupid import laws regarding DRZs... I'm in Spain right now. I could do the Pyrenees from here, rather than the UK. But then I would need to sell the bike rather than bring it home to the UK. Or, potentially, keep it unregistered as parts. But then I end up with a big pile of parts slowly rusting, and realistically, nowhere to store them...
Well, I suppose buying the bike here then selling it again isn't too terrible. I might get similar amount to what I first paid if I am lucky.

Not sure what it’s like in Spain but if you bought a DRZ400 in the UK and put 3000 miles on it in a year, as long as you kept it in nice condition you’d get most if not all your money back.
So do Spain this year, come back to UK, buy another bike and continue as planned.
The trouble with the internet is that there’s too much information and people feel they need to research and get things right - no perfect
My advice is just go on a trip anywhere on anything it’s the unknown that makes it exciting and the f***ups that make it funny.

Well I certainly agree - the best trip I ever made was an impromptu trip to Rome. Booked the flights a day before I went, found accomodation there. Didn't take any guide books. I have to say, walking around a corner and seeing the F*****g colloseum is a LOT more impressive than following a guide book there!
So I like the philosophy. But I also don't want to have a catestrophic breakdown in the middle of the Steppe if I can avoid it But, yes. Heck it. I seriously might buy a bike here and sell it again later. Part of me really likes the idea of having one bike that I do all this crazy stuff on. Me and my trusty steed... but in reality, that's probably the least important thing. You do get attached to these little guys though. I kept my last car for 5 years and bought it twice!

Nobody wants it
But sometimes it happens, and when it does, you deal with it. There's always a solution. If you don't see it, it often just presents itself.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
