Hey Marbella, you may want to consider buying a bike when you get to America.....because it can be cheaper than shipping your bike both ways.
Also there's a couple from Holland (l think) on this website who have travelled from Alaska to TDF who could advise you better than me.
I also have an English friend in California who would buy you a bike, prepare it & offer you advise on the trip because he & his wife went from LA to TDF last year.
Good luck whatever you decide.
PS, those prices you were quoted are very reasonable!

Agreed, dozens of articles here on travelers from UK/EU buying bikes in USA, prepping them and heading South. Much cheaper here and you can re-sell the bike when you return from S. America. Shop Craig's list or Cycle Trader.
YES ... it is possible, you will get a legal title in YOUR NAME, which will allow passing of all borders. NO Carnet required for any of North or South America.
Keep reading here ... it's all here a dozen times.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
