I want to do something similar, but then from Laos to Pakistan, via China.

We are actually OK with an escort and plan to enter Pakistan from Iran around early May. Ideally we would like ride with some other people if possible which I guess there will be at that time of year.
We are actually from Shanghai and both speak Mandarin fluently... Fanny is Shanghanese and I am a British citizen, permanent resident of Hong Kong and registered in Shanghai. We are in discussions with Chinese authorities who have been extremely helpful to us throughout our expedition and we are looking at options to either enter China along the KKH in Xinjiang (1st choice) OR ride through India and enter China from Nepal (2nd choice) in third week of May (we are checking calendar for an auspicious date to actually enter and will check with feng shui master).
We have to decide in advance which route we take so that paperwork for China can be completed in time... it takes 3 months or so. We will also be joined by many Chinese motorcycle clubs who follow Fanny on her blog.sina.com.cn/bigbiketrip as her expedition is followed by hundreds of thousands of Chinese (in Mandarin and Cantonese).
We have a English blog at www.bigbiketrip.net but its really just a diary for our own use. Also, Rupert & Fanny's Big Bike Trip | Facebook
