It's not tricky at all to keep your vehicle in Thailand for up to six months: every 30 days, before your temp import permit expires you take it to any customs office and get a free 30 day extension. I've done this a number of times without major problems. Only in Mae Sai did I have a problem, because they didn't understand what I wanted, they then issued me with a new temp import, but forgot to cancel the old one in the computer system, which caused a lengthy delay the next time I entered Thailand.
If you want to stay longer you simply take it out of Thailand and come right back in. I have read about expats who keep doing this for years, although customs have started to clamp down on that.
