Angry Broken Minsk in Vietnam

Hi everyone
We're after some advice from anyone who has experience with minsks.
We bought a minsk from Cuongs in Hanoi a few weeks ago.
We are in Dalat now, and we only just made it was running very rough, struggling to get up hills and it sounded like it was misfiring.
On looking at it the following day it had a very weak spark to begin with and a very black sparkplug. After cleaning the spark plug then no spark at all.
Sine then we have changed the spark plug - still no spark, changed the electric box and transformer - still no spark.
There is a charge from the generator, and there is a charge from the wire coming from the generator into the electric box, but no charge from the electric box to the transformer. We have tried a new wire from the electric box to the transformer but this made no difference.
We've followed all the steps in the manual and we don't know what to try next.

We're having problems finding a mechanic because of the holidays and we're not sure the mechnics here will be able to help on the minsk anyway.

Please can you advise any next steps to take, as we are really stuck.

many thanks
Mark and Gemma

are you sure the electrical box is working and everything is connected right?

see if you have a charge at the back of the box. If not, it's shot. The Viets love to sell you old boxes. But they're easy to fix, though time consuming. Scrap out all the foam and get to an electrical shop to have the little capacitor, usually that one is burned out, replaced. After you're done just fill it up with wax and let it dry.

If you got a charge get a new wire. And make sure your transformer is grounded correctly, cause if it's a little lose, happens easy on a minsk cause of all the vibration, you only get a charge every now and then, explaining the misfires.

Dalat is good and cheap place to get stuff repaired, the milling shops did some wonders for next to no money when I came through.

Also try to talk to the easy-Rider Guys hanging around there, they were really helpful and brought me to two mechanics who work on their mock-Choppers and therefore can think outside of the Honda-Wave-Box.

Good Luck

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
