Buy a motorcycle in India and travel to Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Birma

Hi,

I'm planning 1 year trip to Asia starting in October. I want to buy a motorcycle in India and travel to Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Birma. Do you think it will be possible? Do you have any tips?

regards

There is issues with doing this - have a search on HU about buying a Royal Enfield in India and you will get chapter and verse on the problems.

It is possible to buy a bike in India but it has to be registered in an Indian's name but plenty of foreigners do this, I have a couple of times when a friend there has put it in his. I took my last one into Nepal without a problem, customs saw the Indian number plate and waved me through as did Indian customs on my return.

I have known people in the past have taken them into Pakistan but relations between the two have deteriorated since then and it might not be possible now, I would suggest you go to the border and ask. If you cannot get into Pakistan with it I recommend leave the bike in India and rent one in Pakistan it is a great place to ride especially up the KKH into the mountains.

I have tried to find out myself if it is possible to take one into Bangladesh but could not come up with a definitive answer but am hoping to go there by bicycle instead, I would say go to the border and try to enter, you will need a multiple entry Indian visa for this trip anyway and the worse that can happen is they turn you away.

Getting from India into Burma might not be possible at the moment but others might know different, it has always been a difficult country to get into.

Royal Enfields are popular in India but I have toured the whole country on a 150cc including with a passenger and that size is perfectly adequate, I had a Hero Impulse last time and it was the perfect bike for India.

July 2022, Pakistan is not allowing India-registered bikes to enter the country across the Wagah/Attari border.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
