Cambodian petrol #f650gs twin.
Hi All,
I filled up with 97 super, thought I'd give the bike a treat, but now I'm having problems in traffic with stalling in first and second. Is 97 gasahol, had problems with it before in Thailand or am I headed for fuel pump trouble. I did think at the time that 97 should have been selling at a higher price than it was. Thought it would be fine after seeing so many up market cars, wish I owned the Lexus dealership here. Thanks for any info.

Hi John,
You might have problems with your carb. Gasohol fuel is mixed with Ethanol which is not good for the seals.
I am currently in Thailand and always use regular 91 fuel.
Have a look on the GT Rider forum, there is a long discussion about it.

Maybe not the fuel?
Hi there,
This is just a suggestion, but it may not be the fuel.
I'm currently in Nepal on my 2001 F650gs having ridden from Ireland. I had a similar problem with the bike just cutting out esp when it had warmed up and I was in slow traffic it would just die.
My husband is thankfully pretty handy and after a bit of research found this can be a common problem in the F650gs.
He did a combination of things including:
Check battery connections for tightness
Check wiring loom near rear preload adjuster
Reset ECU (see F650 faq website)
Reset throttle position sensor (See F650 faq website)
Clean throttle body thoroughly with carb cleaner, esp idle valve
This took a full day and we don't know which of these fixed the problem but it seems to have worked.

We have a 2007 F650GS and a Dakar, both have had the same problem of cutting out traffic when hot, on both bikes it worked out to the the side stand sensor once we had stopped and put the side stand down and back up again the problem stopped.

Thanks everyone for your input. I have had a chat with an expat here in Cambodia and he says the most probable cause is poor quality of the petrol. His Honda started to play up as soon as he crossed over from Laos and filled up.I should be back in Thailand in a few days and will fill up with the good stuff and see how it goes. If there is no improvement I,ll start on your list, if it applies to the 800 twin.thanks Chipmunk.

...it's more than likely to be poor fuel. It can be common for most carburettor bikes to have problems whilst idling for long periods in hot climates. The fact of the bike not moving (lack of air flow) and the heat from the engine bearing onto the carb, any fuel in the float chamber will warm, becoming thinner thus causing poor running.

(Probably won´t help the OP right now, but.... )
especially if you need to use the bottled fuel that they sell on the countryside, it might be a good idea to carry a filter, like a "sock", that you simply put in front of the tank opening, and pour the stuff through that. Won´t help with the fuel quality itself, but just might keep some of the filth particles from the dirty&rusty containers away, and also keep your bike´s fuel filters in better working condition for longer.
