China does not recognize the carnet. Nor do they recognize your drivers licence or registration.

Hi there,

We travelled into Tibet from Nepal recently (with a Tibetan guide that we were told was necessary) and, although we were told beforehand that we would need to leave a huge deposit at the boarder to get the bike in, when we arrived, the officials saw the carnet and wanted to stamp it instead of using the deposit. They were, however, pretty confused about the whole deal and we had to direct them about what to fill in and what not to.

We have heard that they are in the process of beginning to recognise carnets and that by next year this could be in force properly. We're not sure how true this is, but it worked for us last June at that particular boarder...

Happy Travels!

hello jim and lisa

interesting to read that you managed to travel from nepal to china.
what documents did you need exactly? how much did it cost? can you give me contact detailes of your tibetian guide?
did you need the guide for your whole trip? or just for the boarder crossing?

would be very nice to get any answer from you

ralph

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
