Getting rid of car in Iran
if you should ever need to get rid of a car in iran, here's how you do it:
because of customs andthe carnet you can't just leave it soewhere and walk away - would be a bad experience at the border when you exit.
first thing what you do is to prepare with about 4 days of time and go buy a iranian simcard, you'll need it and its not expensive.
basically you just need one sheet of paper with some text in farsi and some signature. this letter will be the confirmation from iran customs that the thing with the car is done and they will not demand any money from you in the future.
- first you contact the iranian automobil club: mr alamda there speaks good english 021 619 34 325
-then you have your car transported to teheran customs warehouse "gumruk shariar". it's west outside the city. mr. alamda can help you to get a lifting or towing car for you if needed. make shure that you arrive at shariar as early as possible. ask for opening hours.
-when you are there you enter the big governmental complex by the passenger entrance about 50 metres left of the car entrance and head straight into the building in front of you. when you are inside turn left to room nr. 8 and ask for mr. nuri (091 235 74 802), he speaks good english. if you can't explain what you want you call mr. alamdar and give the phone to mr. nuri.
-you will need to have an agent for whats coming now. believe me, without speaking farsi you have no chance doing it alone!
you will spend the next hours running behind the agent from one counter to another. if you're lucky, he gets it done in one day and the first part of the adventure is over. in my case they closed at about 3pm and i had to continue on the next day.
-when the agent has finished running around he will give you a sheet of paper. with this go to mr. nuri again to be sure what to do next.
-then you go back to tehran to the customs headquarter building. go to the second floor and ask for mr. avaiani. he will continue working with the paper from the agent, mr. alamdar can tell him over the phone what you need. bring a good book with you!
-when mr. avaiani is finished you will have to go back to shariar ouside of the city to mr. nuri. he will manage someone to write your letter. also bring a book here!
-when you have your letter, you will have to go back to mr. avaiani at the headquarters again to give it to him.
after that you are free :-)
the car will have to stay at the customs warehouse for two months until it will be declared abandoned. then they send a confirmation to the automobilclub of iran and there they will translate it to english and send it to the automobilclub of your country.
i did it in september 2014 like this and it worked well. the costs will depend on where your car is and in what condition. in my case it had to be lifted and brought to tehran about 80km of distance what cost me around 200 dollars.
you'll also spend some money for taxi between the two custom places. the agent took 500'000 rials when all was done.
there will be a lot of sitting around, so make sure you bring what you need. at shariar there is a shop where you can buy food and drinks. it's when you enter the main gate on the right side accross the big square.
good luck!
