There are plenty of places in Chaing mai to hire bikes a fairly good XR250 should cost you around 1000bht per day,(discounts given if you have it for a few days..always haggle) but there not insured and as far as i know you cant buy any, generally speaking if you were in an accident being a foriegner you'll be paying big time. However it's a great place for bikes. In 2004 i did a 6 day tour through jungles/mountains around that area with a tour company(if you want the name let me know) they had there own guides, they got the bikes, they carried all your luggage from hotel to hotel, fixed the bikes when they broke and provided there own insurance inc medical.and all for a very reasonable price>>they also knew where to get the best massage after a long hot day.As for hemets take your own, good helmets in Thailand a very rare...Best time to go Jan to Mar or its either way too hot or wet.

I was there end of 2004. We rented almost new 250XRs from Jaguar motorcycles and had absolutely no problems. Its near the moat in the center, and also in the Lonely Planet books. I believe we paid around $12 a day but I am not sure. No insurance offered that I am aware of.

The riding there was very nice with the fantastic roads and plenty to see.

Check out the GT-Rider website and look for some suggestions for trips there. We also bought his map and did the Mae Hong Son (sp?) loop which took a few days.

Cool Honda dream ?

If you are not going to do "rough off-road" consider renting a "city bike" like a honda dream.
It's a 125 cc, semi-automatic. It does 100 km/h and you can rent one for 150 bath p/day. Yes, realy!

Doesn't that sound better then 1.000 bath a day or 12 U$ a day. ?

Actually, for 1000 bath a day you can rent a small car.

You can buy some chinese made helmets that are better then the avarage Thai death-trap. Cost around 800 bath for a integral (full face).
Check the bike-shops or Tesco-lotus.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
