Indian visas
Hi to all
In august i am setting off on my adventure and was hoping to spend about nine months touring india. Apparently the indian visa only lasts six months - can you renew it at all or any one got round this issue in some way.
Thanks

Hi Bec,
Indian tourist visas last six months from the day of issue (not the day you enter the country). Unfortunately, if you want longer you will (officially - see below) have to leave the country and get another one issued. The easy option is to head up into Nepal and get a new visa in Kathmandhu, but with the present political climate that might not be advisable. Or you could head back into Pakistan, but that would be back-tracking (assuming you're coming that way in the first place).
However, when we were in Pune in 2002 there was a travel agent who had an 'agreement' with the local police/government to extend visas on medical grounds. From memory it cost about 1000 Rupees for a month's extension, but I have no idea if he still offers this service. We know people who used him and it all worked out fine, despite being a bit dodgy!
We've recently returned from living/working in Delhi, so if you want any more info about India, don't hesitate to drop us a line.

Unless things have changed you can't keep your vehicle in India for more than six months. So, you probably have to leave anyway.
You can also drive into Bangladesh and maybe back. Problem may be that they might not give you another visa, if the max. permitted stay is 6 months out of 12, so you may also have to get another passport.

The carnet gives your bike 12 months in India. The medical extensions in Pune are dodgy, the police/customs know this and they know you know too. Visas for longer than 6 months can be had, depending on your passport, check at embassy. Pakistan is the easiest way to extend a visa and may not be much of a backtrack if you plan where to go and when... do 3 months in the Himalayas, nip back to Pak, then return to do the rest of India. Mountains good June to Sept, the south Sept to June.
