Irainan plates for foreign bikes
Hi we crossed the turkey iran border at dogbiscuit last week. By cusoms we were told that if we stay in iran for more than 10 days we must reigister our bikes for iraian number plates, then deregister then when we leave. Has any one done this. Or more to the point has any one not done this, stayed more than 10 days with out resistering the bikes and had any problems exiting the country? We met some Austrian overlanders who had crossed turkey/iran at a border to the south and they not been told about any need to change their plates.
Also our insurance runs out soon, is it checked when exiting the country?
Thanks a lot George

We happily travelled around Iran for 3 weeks last year on foreign plates, as were the other foreign bikers that we ran into. I've never heard of needing local plates before.
We didn't get insurance checked either.

We stayed 3 weeks in Iran in April 2009 and never had problems with our foreign plates nor were we ever asked to show proof of insurance. And this, despite being stopped numerous times by police (kept trying to ride on highways reserved for cars and trucks only).

Tabriz Tourist Information
Hi there,
We were in Iran in June, but in a car. We spoke to Tabriz tourist information about the plates and he said this is the last thing you need to worry about. If you are stopped (we were plenty of times, but it was more fun than anything else) then say you have to pick up the nplates in tehran or similar, and you are on your way. No one once asked us about the plates though.
As for insurance you need it, but whether anyone will ask you is another matter. We picked it up in Tabriz, again the guys from tourist information helping out. It cost 20 euros for a month for the car.
Decision on this is yours, but I can't remember the last time I had insurance, it might well have been Iran.
Good luck either way
It's a great country. Be sure to go to Yazd !
Cheers
Ollie
