Hello
With regards to the leaving a bike.
My experience is from this year and the import of a bike through Dehli customs.
The bikes were air freighted into Dehli and its true that the customs insisted on writing the following text into my passport:
The motorcycles...(reg no.)carnet de passage no. ...have been imported into India on...(date) to be re-exported before...(date, 6 months after import although an extension may be applied for).
As the customs man explained, this is applying to the motorcycles only, and as long as they are re-exported before the date, or an extension is applied for, there is no problem.
When leaving India through Dehli airport the customs officer didn't read the page about the motorcycles ( at my request they wrote it on the last page of my passport)so to be honest I can't say if they would have a problem with it. I dont see why they would.
When arriving overland, this is 11 years ago, nothing was entered into my passport.
With regards to storage, the customs officials at The New Customs House, Dehli, said it was possible to leave the bikes there but later withdrew the offer saying they couldn't, wouldn't be responsible for the theft of parts or the bikes and I was advised to use a storage company.
The storage company recomended was the Central Warehousing Corporation and the charges came to 60 euros for 4 square meters (two bikes) for 5 months. (1000 dollars a month at another storage company ran by DHL)
I will be picking the bikes up again in a month and if you get back in touch I will be able give an opinion on the storage company.
This should be enough for your freind to enjoy his ride and not worry about leaving his bike in India. If you need any more information, get in touch.
Regards
Andrew
