Nice place to recover in Goa needed
Hi there,

Currently the wife is feeling right poorly, with a never ending case of Delhi Belly. We have been to the doctor here in Delhi, and will most probably be popping into a hospital in Mumbai for some secondary tests.

But aside from the technical side, we are looking to find somewhere nice for her to recover, most probably Goa. Don't mind spending a bit of money, just need somewhere we can rest up for a couple of weeks, or maybe even longer. Need a good toilet (!!!), nice restaurants and beach or pool type place to chill out.

Any recommendations?

Maybe somewhere on the way?

We should arrive in about a week.

Hi Ollie,

we stayed at the Santana Beach Resort... its has rooms that also have kitchenettes and good toilets

Its in Candolim. Prices were good when we stayed there a couple of years ago. Friendly staff. Restaurant AOK. 50mtrs from the beach but also in easy reach of shops/restaurants and the main road for bus service.

Must admit, we took super bung-up pills with us. Try eating vegetarian for a while... usually works.

I suggest Benaulim beach if you want peace. The fishermen still drag up their boats there. Its about 10kms from the town of Madgaon(railhead with links to Mumbai etc). Many of the other beaches are too frantic and busy.

The beach shacks here are nice and the beach itself is a dream. You can rent a moto in the area if you want to risk shattering your peace and calm.
I'll be back again this year

Thumbs up Arambol Beach
It gets my vote- and it is the most northerly of the Goan beaches so not quite as far to go as the other places if driving down from Mumbai.
If possible though, maybe try and avoid Mumbai- it is a pain to get in and out of, takes forever.
Sorry to hear that Jenny is still suffering, not much fun, my sister was ill on and off for the whole four months she was in India (and she's a veggie). Could you go to a hospital on the way to avoid the Mumbai bit? Ahmedabad is quite a reasonable sized down or Udaipur.
whoops- am I sounding a bit anti-Mumbai? Sorry folks.

So back to Arumbol (alternative spelling) - a quiet beach with a nice atmosphere - go, enjoy and see what you think. We went out in a boat with a fisherman to see dolphins.

PS There's a number of sites to visit about Benaulim, if the OP wants to have a look around. It's possible to avoid the expensive hotels and rent a house there.

I dont know the one that Tiffany suggests but it seems to be Benaulim -ish; I might have a look there myself.

If you don't mind spending a bit of cash I can highly recommend the Pousada Tauma in Calangute. We stayed there for about 10 days recuperation after my wife had a motorcycle accident while we were riding in India. It really did feel like the lap of luxury and an ideal place to relax and recuperate. It's right on the edge of the main town centre but you would never know as it is completely secluded in it's own spacious grounds. Definitely not cheap though, but at the time I felt the spend was justified.

NO!!!!! Calangute is a total dive! Go to Palolem, or Arambol. Palolem is the best beach in Goa by a country mile. Lots of places to stay so you can take your pick. Would be a nice place to relax for a while.

I noticed on another thread you wanted to leave India asap. You must have changed your mind. If you still want out and dont fancy drive to Chennai you could go over to Chittagong in Bangladesh. They have experience shipping cars from over there, we have just been.

Ah yes, the world has fallen out of my bottom in India too. In my case it was a dose of the Mumbai Quickstep.....

You should be alright on whichever Goan beach you choose, and as money is no problem, then you have lots of choices.

If you're going south and can leave your jeep/car thingy, then a trip on the Kerelan backwaters is very enjoyable.

I have one (and only one) positive thing to say about the Calangute and Candolim stretch of coastline.

It was like Blackpool on steroids with football shirted Brits, English beakfasts, Union Flag tablecloths. It was driving me mad and I desperately needed wheels so we could get out of this polluted stretch of coastling so I went and hired a Honda twist-and-go scooter and it was this act that got me back into riding bikes again after a gap of 28 years.

So I thank northern Goa for that, and if I ever go back it will be to southern Goa.

I'd go to Palolem beach down in the South of Goa. It was really quiet 9 years ago, but I'm not sure what it's like now! Either that or try Northern Karnataka.

My sympathy for your wife's misery. I drove all over the Goa coast early '09, but found Gokarna in Karnataka to be best for relaxing. Spanish Place on Kudle Beach is a real gem, and has most amenities.
Palolem is probably your best bet, there is a lot of accomodation to choose from, but it is a hard-sell tourist area now. On the other hand, everything is available, at a price, and no national group dominates the area. Get among Russians, Isrælis or Brits and you will understand what I mean

Gokarna is a great place if you like to lie about all day taking Ketamin. When I was there, there was someone walking about with an IV drip hanging out his arm so he could put the stuff straight into his vein. That was the worst I saw, but you frequently have to step over comatose Israelis to get out your room. Perhaps I caught it at a bad time but I'd never go back to try again.
