renting 'big' bikes in Indonesia (Bali, Java, Lombok)

I am planning a 4 week Indonesia trip, with a friend who is Indonesian.

So far, our plan is to spend a few days in Bali, then travel Java up to Yogyakarta or all the way to Jakarta, fly from there directly to Lombok for a few days before departure from Bali.

This is not going to be a motorbike trip. However, I am seeking opportunities to build shorter motorbike trips into our itinerary.

Is it at all possible to rent motorbikes (e.g. 250cc dirt bikes) in Bali, Java and/or Lombok? If so, where, and what kind of bike can we expect?

Where would be the most rewarding opportunities for 1-2 day off-road trips?

I suppose this is more likely to be possible on Bali or Lombok, since we want to avoid backtracking when traveling through Java.

Would it make sense to bring my own helmet or even jacket with protection along?

Go east!

You can rent ANYTHING in Bali and motorcycles are no exceptions! But why go to crowded Jawa, when you can keep going east and go to the much less explored Sumbawa and then Flores. That's what I did and thoroughly enjoyed it!

most folks actually take the fast boat between Bali and Lombok rather than flying, especially if you are going to the Gili isles.

Java was the most hectic place I've ever ridden... It's insane, good fun though.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
