hi alex, nice photos! can you tell us a bit more about which routes you took in china / tibet, during which months and how cold/warm it was? did you have problems finding petrol? how big is your tank?

Route:
Druzhba, Urumqi, Turpan, Hami, Liuyuan (312 HWY)
Liuyuan, Aksay, Ige, Da Qaidam, Golmud (215 HWY)
Golmud, Amdo, Naghu, Lhasa (109 HWY)
Lhasa, Shigaze, Lhadze, Dingri (318 HWY)
After Dingri I turned left to Everest BC. There is about 100 kms offroad without labelling. I was there in July-August 2006. 312 HWY is very, very, very hot in summer (+52C in the daytime, +38C at night) Alt +1500 -60 m. 215 HWY is more comfortable (+35C in Aksay, +20C in Golmud) Alt 1000-3800m (2800m in Golmud). 109 HWY is one of highest and coldest road in the world. ( +15C -1C)
Alt 4700 - 5300m. In Lhasa 3800m +20C. 318 HWY is good-looking mountain road along Brahmaputra river. (+20C 0C) Alt 3800-5200m. Longest road section without fuel 280 km (Aksay - Da Qaidam). Petrol consumption is 8-12 l per 100km depend on altitude. I have a standard AT tank 23 l.

ive heard from some people it cost them 10,000$ (yes 10 thousand) to bring a vehicle into china for 28 days. does that make sense to you?

I had chinese visa (100$ in Moscow) and 600$ for 8000 km - 15 days in China and Tibet. If you have 10000$ you can spend 1 year there)

how did you arrange this deal for 600$, through an agency or the embassy in moscow or ... ? do you get charged per Km? did you have to take a guide?

Some more info:
I contacted the two girls who did bangkok - brighton in a tuk tuk and went through china. they paid 10,000$ for 28 days and gave me a reference at the CSITS in Beijing.
Liu there sent me this: "I have to tell you that we can't organize individual motorbike trips to China. Firstly, it is unlikely to be permitted by the Chinese authority, secondly the cost will be too high for individuals due to various restrictions. We only deal with groups due to these two reasons. If you are interested, you may contact http://www.globeriders.com. I understand that they may organize a trip to China and Tibet in the near future."
Im guessing that the 10K the brighton girls paid was a "group price" which Liu talks about in her mail. I will post any more info I get here

G'Day,
sounds about right... as a Hong-Kong motorcycle riders group had to pay 2200 US$ per person for 8 days riding in Mainland China in late 2006 (Hong-Kong - Guilin - Hong-Kong).

I did not have any guides. I live in Russia and my bike have a russian number plate. I got a chinese tourists visa in moscow without agency. I have a papers: chinese visa, international driving licence and russian documents for the bike. Noone asked me anything else. IMPORTANT! Chinese customs officers do not know which papers I need to get in China with bike! I entered into China without customs declaration and any costoms papers for my bike. I have had to come back to the custom office after entering China. I asked a drivers in boundary cafe inside China which papers for the bike I need to drive through China... I had nothing. Papers: customs declaration, yellow and pink papers where they write down date of bike. Without this papers you will go home on foot and your bike will be a good pre-production model for the chinese motorcycle industry))
