The only downside is you can't repair them yourself.
Weight only matters if you're going to be picking it up, or hustling it around. How many people go around the world on those lead weights BMW calls the R1100GS at over 240kg wet.

When you want to go around the world, if you really want to enjoy it, you have to have a light and simple bike:
-Fall, picking it up, getting stuck in mud, do offroad you will. Plus, if you really want to go anywhere, you will feel more confident with a light bike.
-You can fix simple mechanical problem in most part of the world, not electronic problem.
You don't need a heavy motorcycle to tour the world. Sure you can do it on Harley, but you will only limit yourself in your choice of roads.
