Cool Beginner touring bike for Bolivia/Peru

Hi all!

I am planning a trip through Bolivia & Peru with a friend in a month and could use advice on the best bike for the occasion. I have limited bike touring experience (have only done the Mae Hong Son loop in Thailand on a semi-automatic 125cc bike on tar roads for a week ... by most standards, a relatively easy route).

Now we're considering going to Bolivia and Peru for 1.5 months where a lot of the travel will be on dirt (we've both ridden dirt bikes in the backcountry so are comfortable riding). We'll be traveling minimally with just backpacks that we plan to strap to the back of the bike with bungees. I think a 250cc would be great for us. Anyone traveled in the region before that would suggest an economical motorbike for us to look for? We'll be buying one when we're there.

Thanks so much!!
-Kevin

Hi,

I crossed Bolivia and Peru when i went around southamerica on a Honda CG 125 wich i bought in Chile. This bike was perfect for me...i did not look too touristic and all the parts are available if needet but i think its not strong enouth to travel two up + luggage and it gets very slow hight up in the Mountains at 4800 meters:

To register a bike in Bolivia or Peru will not be easy so rather bay in Paraguay like a friend of my did:

Thanks for the quick response Tobi! Just to be clear - did you mean buy a bike in Paraguay and cross the border into Bolivia? Is it much easier to find a bike and get the necessary paperwork in that country than in Bolivia?

As of right now, flights to Bolivia are much cheaper. Would it take much longer to buy a bike in Bolivia and get the necessary insurance/carnet paperwork to set off? Thanks again for your help! -Kevin

Bus rides are cheap in Bolivia as well so you could fly to Bolivia and take the Bus to Paraguay.

Good luck, Tobi

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
