A little help please.

Hi Folks been lurking without registering for a while.
I have two questions for the brains trust. I have a 92 XT600, I've been cleaning it up & am hoping to use it for some trips this year. Pulled the air box off the other day & cleaned the carbies. Any way everything back together except the hose in the photo below? Please point me in the right direction. Also When I tried to start it the only reaction I get is the starter relay ticking. It is a electric start only, No Kick start. I've checked the stand cut out, Tried it with stand up, Clutch in & out. I think my starter motor might be shot? Haven't had much to do with these bikes so am in need of some guidance. Thanks

Starter Solenoid Relay Yamaha XT600 E 90-96

not sure about yamaha pipework,

But if your bike has a starter relay ( I believe it does), I would look there 1st.
If it is clicking, then your cut out switches are working fine. The usual culprit is the starter relay, these can usually be prized apart, and the burnt contacts can be scraped clean and reused.

Just put a wire between the two big nuts on the starter relay or a pair of pliers, there will be a few sparks but if the motor spins you have ruled out the starter motor itself.

Most of the time its the starter relay that`s the problem.

The pipe is just a breather it dangles freely like you old fella.

Jup, its the breather from the right CV carb. Mine lies on top of the airbox, and is routed over the airbox, and under the frame, on the right side of the bike, just above the airbox cover.

Sweet, thanks fellas I'll be home from work in about 3 hours & I'll check with the pliers method. I'm glad that pipe doesn't have a home means everything is back together right. :-) I'll let ya know how it turns out.

Did the pliers to the two big nuts & the exact same thing happened...
Just a click from the starter relay.

That means me starter motor is shot yeah? Bugger.

Yeah charged Battery for 12hrs the other day. That was my first port of call. I've also tried to jump start it...

Just had a mate call me to say G'day. After a brief explanation of the situation he said Connect your jumpers, earth to the foot peg & touch the positive to the stud on the back of the starter motor... What happened. Nothing. She's shot duck.

Ok got the starter motor out & it works so Just needs a little TLC I get to that tomorrow.

Thanks for your help I'll keep you all informed & hopefully in a week or two she'll be on the road & I can start looking at going for a ride. Now time for some more

I had a similar problem, it worked fine out in my hand but didnt have the grunt when fitted to the bike.

Turned out to be a bad ground, so make sure your getting a good ground everywhere (clean the crap off everything)

If it is & your wondering how to hold the brushes in, here`s how i did it,

its become a bit famous now & its known as "Ye Olde Cable Tie Trick"





Pay attention to where the ties are, right at the top so it allows you to slide the armature up in to the housing.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
