CDI unit damage symptoms?

HI! AGAIN! Thanx for your previous advice. I checked the spark plugs- no oil just a bit of carbon build up and the gap was a bit large. corrected it , cleaned it and it works fine .The air filter and fuel filters are just fine. I even made an air trap for the oil cooler as i thought that the temperature was affecting the Ignition unit but that didn't sort the problem out. Since last time we spoke (+- 3 days ago) misfireing got worse and now when the bike is in 4000 rpm at any gear it just looses power. I thought it was rings going but there was no oil on the spark plug. Also when i rev the bike in the neutral the exhaust smokes a lot and motor misfires badly at high revs.
I ride the bike to work out in the desert about 60km a day and soon im due home . Im worried it will get worse on my way.
Is this a symptom of the CDI unit going?
Could i have missed something?

Missed your earlier posts.

Could be the CDI box itself - you'll need to take it to a Dealer who has testing facilities.

Could be the ignition pickup - I'm not familiar with XT's but it's probably located inside the engine to one side & sits outside the flywheel. If so, there may be a little trigger on the outside of the flywheel that triggers the spark. There should be a bunch of wires coming out of the engine (on the left?), they will be for the charging & ignition systems. Using a wiring diagram, identify the ignition wires & check for the correct resistance readings using a multimeter. Get the correxct readings from a manual. I had a similar problem on a CDI equipped DR600 years ago, fixed it this way, it needed a new pickup.

Dont jump straight into its the CDI replace it loop. It could be something far easier. Have a look at the HT lead condition they can crack up and this manifests itself at high reves. Also test the coil though it is unlightly to be a fualt as when thy go they provide a weak spark that affects starting primarily.

Replacement CDI units are avialable in Uk from ebay. see link.

Found it JRM still has an aftermarket CI for sale should not cost much to post and way cheaper then Yammaha.

With a multimeter, you can also check the resistance of the coils primary & secondary windings - specs will be in the Manual.

Since you are riding 60- kms every day in the desert (off road) I'm 100% positive it is the air filter. See my reply on your other post.

have you already checked the diaphragm of the secondary carburetor?

It must open from the 4,000 rpm, in case that is pierced, the engine doesn't run fine in high rpm...
