Changing front ends can be tricky, or easy, it all depends.

If you can find a setup with the right stem to go n the headstock, it's pretty easy, although you may need to "adapt" the steering stops (often involves grinding them off and welding new ones on to work with the new triples).

If you don't have or can't find a setup with the right stem, it's often possible to press out the stem from the bottom triple of your OEM setup and fit it into the "new" front end, then proceed as above. If you don't want to bugger up your existing front end, ebay for a used set of OEM triples.

Whatever you do, you'll probably want to replace your steering head bearings while you're at it.

Hi Falk, I have done the TT600RE to TTR600 suspention swap. The front forks are a straight swap, takes 1/2hour, all cables are same length, (I found this out AFTER buying new brake and speedo cable for a TTR) so there is no need to change them. I took her for a little spin before I changed the rear shock, not very nice to ride (unstable). So you will have so source a second hand TTR shock. to change it, again 1/2 hour as it should be a straight forward. I fitted a White Power shock for a TTR, the bottom monts were a little wider than the standard shock so I get a friend to machine me a new slightly longer bolt. However I imagine with the Ohilns from a TTR you should't have to do this. The difference is great. I have about 70kg on the back and hardly notice it on or off road. With the W/P shock with a stiffer spring (not nessary unless loaded up)

I found that by the time the cost of a second hand ohlins (breakers count it as a speical shock so want more for it regardless of it being standard on the TTR) and having it rebuilt then postage and package back and forth and you still have an old shock, so I brought a new one.
It has been said that the Ohlins fitted to Yamaha's are built to a specification, lower than what you would normaly get when bying a ohlins from the factory. The W/P is a factory shock and hence VERY good.

Also they look much cooler with the long legs!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
