crank side play
hi guys i finally managed to replace the stator casing gasket on my xt600 49r after my ignition problems . while i had the casing off i felt for play on the crank bye grabbing the rotor/flywheel , i can move the crank side to side what seems a lot, i dont have a dial gauge but with a ruler it seems like just short of .25 mm now i know the bearings are c3 type and have side to side play built in but all does not seem well . when i got the bike i took the inspection screw out of the casing to feel for play , 8 years ago and 18000 miles ago bike now has 36000 miles if all is right with speedo and there was side to side play but i dont think it was this bad . the bike runs fine . do the main bearings go on the early kick start models . i need to take off the clutch right hand casing to check the primary drive /crank nut is tight , if it has come undone a little would this give me the movement ? zigzag

Side to side play generally isn't a big problem unless it's very excessive.
It's the up and down play that you should be worried about. That's what 'rod knock' is.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
