Engine Gaskets Question

Hey guys and gals,

I have an 84 xt 600, and I put a later model engine into it, which I believe was from a 1988 model bike. Now the time has come that I want to regasket the engine, and paint it up and whatnot.

Ive been looking for a complete gasket set online, and have found a few. One gasket set says its for a 88 and up engine, and that 87 and previous where different.

Long story short, is there a way I can figure out exactly what year my engine is, so I can make sure I get the right gasket set. I looked around at the numbers, but nothing seems to reference the year. Thanks for any insight you guys/gals can give me.

on my xt year model '93 i have a 3UY engine prefix which on my engine is located on the left hand side just underneath the cylinder at the top of the case... also my VIN prefix would be JYA3UYE0 which just states where it was maufactured (J)apan, (YA)maha, (3UY) engine prefix, and so on... hope this helps...

Im guessing stamped on your cylinder barrel (jug as you guys call it)
there will be the letters 3AJ if its a 1988 & onwards "jug".

Your bike will be a 43F im guessing? but i think it will still have 3AJ stamped on the base of the "jug"

Ok so I know its been a few weeks, but I am having not much luck. I will post all the numbers I could find on the bike, and hopefully someoen can help!

this number was on the left side of the bike engine, if you were sitting on the bike

49n-008372

this number was on the other side 34k01

this was the number on the jug 1jk

I cant seem to find anything that matchs any info i can find, thanks.

Well the 49N is for these model & years.

XT 600 L,N,S,T 1984,85,86,87 49N USA

Does the head have 1JK marked also ?

Look for a gasket kit for 49N to be sure, is yours kick only? pretty similar to a 43F im guessing?

or head gasket alone 1JK-11181-01

You can see the model codes here for your bike.

Mezo, thanks very much for the reply, very helpful, and I will order the gasket set for the 84-87.

The motor is kick only, and i didnt see any numbers on the head, although I dont have the tank or anything off, so it may be somewhat hidden from my view.

Also mezo, for what its worth, Im still sad they closed your xt build thread over at adv. I dont know if I posted in it, but I read it constantly.

Oh well shit happens i guess, had quarter of a million hits on that thread as well, it was a good community until gadget boy screwed it up.

I moved on since then, all the lads chipped in & we just set up our own forum on Tenere restorations. Just a shame im not able to post on ADV giving advice like on here (don't ban me please Grant)
