Engine Rebuild XT600

My XT 600 engine needs some work
The splines on the gear lever are stripped the clutch needs replacing I want a kick start fitted ( I have all the bits for the kickstart) The engine smokes alot when first started and uses about half litre of oil every 1000 kms.
When I got the bike 1 year ago the engine had just been rebuilt because of worn 5th gear I dont know why they never changed the worn gear lever shaft. I also dont know if it was rebored.
I was thinking of giving my engine to a mechanic and asking for a strip and rebuild replacing the clutch and gear change shaft, check the cylinder for wear replace valve seals.
I dont know if the cam chain has been changed is it possible to tell if its worn by looking at it.
Is there any thing else that I should change while engine is stripped
I am going to contact slipstream tuning about this work , has any one had dealings with them.
I know the XT is a basic engine but I want an experinced mechanic who knows these engines inside out.

Best way to get to know your engine is to do it yourself. There's nothing too complicated about a XT600 engine!!! A good manual and a half decent tool kit is essential though.

I have a bottom end that I'm breaking if you need any bits - let me know via PM.

Hi Tom. Do you have the Idle Gear that works with the kickstart shaft?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
