Greases/ Lock tight.

Hi, is there a rule of thumb for which bolts you apply anti seize compound to and which you would use lock tight?

I also have a tub of Comma CV Lith-Moly grease and one of Copper grease.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I havent loctited a single bolt on mine, just about everything is greased up.

That might just be why i lost my right sidepanel

I've had to much trouble over time, with sticky bits and pieces, because the previous owner didn't bother to lube bolts.

Anything that can be considered as being a "security nut/bolt" - locktite or similar. Thats brakes - suspension - steering and the like. OR, you can use some form of locknut - Nylocks, Jet nuts (K-nut) etc.

I would use a lock nut on footrest pegs

Lube others with copperslip/copper grease.
Use appropriate washers... wavey/spring/lock/anty-vibe/thackery - loads to choose from.

For stainless into ferrous/alloy, copper grease is ok but others will say not... as long as its not in the list of the security fasteners.

Lube will also effect torque settings. Normally quoted as dry. If you add lube, reduce torque setting by about 40%

Im curious, was the Comma CV Lith-Moly grease a waste of cash or will I get to use it on the bike ?? - or only the kitchen door hinge ?


Ive been going through the bike, dismantling....taking a look around, then lubing and reassembling - although no critical parts as yet, except the foot pegs .

Would using the incorrect grease be a problem ?

Lith-Moly grease is a high load, general purpose grease. Lawn mowers, garage doors and push bikes spring to mind...

Anything is better than nothing... generally. If you have splines to lube (eg. Driveshaft), us Moly grease... not lith-molly
Use bearing grease for bearings. Put Vaseline on your battery terminals.

Use you lith-molly on your footrest pivots... if they pivot

NORD LOCKS are a fantastic invention for a shake proof fastening and can be reused, where as spring washers or nylocks should really be replaced if removed.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
