head gasket glue?
hay guys anyone know what gasket glue to use for the top head?

honestly, NONE I think.

the gasket should have a sealer on it that bonds to the head and cylinder from the factory. if you're reusing an old headgasket, IMO, thats asking for trouble.

Thhe upper part has no gasket and requize some slight use of liquid gasket. I think anything will work.

DON'T use a sealer!

Most high quality head gaskets, like Cometic gaskets, are a Multi Layer Stainless (MLS) steel gasket coated in Viton, any sealer will most likely hinder the performance of the gasket.

I copper sprayed my last head gasket was a Cometic and it blew in about 2000 miles, I just put in a new one dry and it's still holding strong.

Just look at the factory recommendations and buy the best gasket you can find.

Unless of course, you mean the cam cap/valve cover. That you want to use a high temp RTV, preferably Yamaha Bond or Hondabond.

Thanks for the replys, yes I'm talking about the top cam cover where there's no stock gasket. So a high temp rtv would work?

Yeah, just make sure the tube says that it's rated for oil resistance.

Also, make sure you just lay on a nice, thin film. If it's too thick it could cause your cam to rattle around. I think the manual says something like .0012-.0032 inches of gasket is the right tolerance.

If it's the top rocker cover, in many cases you don't need to use sealant on the entire rubber seal. There are points which are more likely to weep oil. Putting it all the way round makes it more likely to make a big mess, get blobs of sealer in your top end and cover your frame and engine in sticky goo.

Usually manuals will only tell you to use a sealer on the "half moon" lobes on most singles. Where the seal lays flat, its very unlikely to weep unless the rubber is old or damaged. Halfords sell loads of stuff like that, as do most motor factors.

If you are talking about the headgasket, then YOU HAVE TO USE THE CORRECT PRESSURE GASKET !! NOT A SEALANT !!! If you expect some RTV sealant to hold in 150 PSI under super high temperatures, good luck !!

Ok it seems I'm not making my self clear, I'm talking about the top cam cover (last piece to go on motor) not the rest of the motor. If you look at the parts catalog there is no gasket mentioned, no rubber no nothing.

Well if my memory serves me correctly, you're right .. There is no rubber gasket.

Like said, just use any high temperature "instant" gasket sealant. Sold by Halfords, motorworld etc etc !

Halfords | Loctite 5910 Premium Silicone Black Gasket Maker/Sealant

The "Yambond" etc are really expensive and nothing special.

Be careful not to go overboad on application. A little goes a long way and you don't want it to end up blocking oil jets etc etc.

Apply it to the engine head if possible instead of the case.

Hi Nikstik,
One word three numbers....... LOCTITE 518. Quite possibly the best sealant ever made IMHO! Make sure both surfaces are spotless for it to work well. Also it doesn't set until the two surfaces are clamped together. If you can't find the Loctite, THREE BOND make a very good silicone sealant, just don't put too much on.

And in an emergency (or if you are a cheap bastard like me, all the time) ordinary grease works well too. I put a thin smear on all the gaskets (other than head gaskets) I put in a motor. It makes taking them apart easier as well as acting as a surprisingly good sealant. I've been doing it for 30 years on motorbikes and farm equipment.

I'm a Hylomar addict. If it's good enough to use as a liquid head gasket on a RR Merlin engine, it should be good enough on the tappet covers.
