Hot Restart - Ignition Pickup Test?

Hi all!

I am working on a 1984 XT600 and I have reason the believe the ignition pickup is failing after a 20 min ride

In the very short time I have had the bike I have replaced the coil, CDI and rebuilt the carburetor as the machine came to me not running with no spark

Now it runs great, but after the 20 min heat soaking the spark goes away

I understand there is a resistance check on the pickup, but I do not have the factory book for specifications
I found a source for new pickups but they are somewhat universal adn they need from me a resistance specification to match one up

Any help would be excellent!!

most pick up coils are about 250-500 ohms. not that critical really, they are connected to high impedance in the ign box so very low current passing through,

on the other hand, rather than the pick up, there's much more of a chance that's it's the so called energy coil in the stator playing games, and that's more of a bastard to solve.

so maybe try doing first the pickup swap, even with a used one

if it doesnt solve it, then it's the energy winding on the stator.

Pulse pickup 90-130 Ohm
CDI exciter coil 160-240 Ohm

Measure the one you have when cold. That will give you a number, a real number. Do it for both pick-up and energiser coils.

When the ignition system fails you can do the following things;

measure the pick-up and energiser coils - if one varies by a large amount then you have found the problem.. less than say 30% you have not found the problem.

throw come cold water over the coil and see if that fixes the problem. Same for the CDI - your looking for a temperature problem - by throwing cold water you cool the component to see if that is the one that causes the problem.
