I'm new, love my Tenere 34L but need help...Please
Hello,
Firstly, what a great forum and what a pleasure it is to be able to talk to so many enthusiasts.
My bike is a 1984 Tenere XT600, bought because I am tall, love classics and thumpers and dream of travelling. I bought it knowing that it needed some work and was ready to get greasy (I have rebuilt a 1960 Triumph and a 1972 Commando) and was also prepared for some 'sophisticated' Japanese engineering.
The wheel bearings needed replacing, I did that, it needed a new chain and spockets so I did that. Great, I thought. But then oil started to blow out of the head gasket (RHS). I read up on replacing the headgasket in my Clymer manual, dropped the engine and took the head off. I then decided to replace the main shaft as the final drive splines were very worn (one turned up on ebay, lucky). That went ok. But I have noticed some slight play in the main crank bearings and as the engine is out and in bits I might as well have a go at replacing them.
My questions are (and prepare yourselves, they might not be the last)...
1/ How do I remove the cam chain sprocket that is mounted on the crank shaft?
2/ Also How much radial play is acceptable in the gudgeon pin? I have a tiny bit of radial play but no movement up/down (if you see what I mean).
3/ Whare is the best place to get XT600 34L parts from in the UK. At the moment I am going to my Yamaha dealer and am always horrified at the cost!
I hope someone can help me here, I am having withdrawl symptoms and need to get back on my bike as soon as I can.
Thanks
Lewis
