kickstart problem and normal oil temp
Hello all
i have fitted a kickstart to my 1986 3aj xt600z tenere and i am having a few poblems. after you kick it over for the first time it then often jams at the top and when you kick it again if goes really stiff almost as if the crank is going backwards. you then need to bump the bike forwards, in gear, to get the kickstart to free up again. i know this sounds odd but i really think that the crank is going backwards. don't know why though. i am pretty sure that the decompressor is working fine.
also does anyone know the normal running oil temperature for the above bike?
thanks

if everything is ok, you should be able to kickstart the bike with your hand.
when you mount the kickstart assy did you check the adjustment of the gear (to check this you have to dismount the gear from the shaft)?
'normal' running oil temperature may vary between 40 and 120 °C. it depends very much on the enviromental conditions. i.e. when riding on wet tarmac (water cooling!) with air temperatures between 0 ... 10 °C oil temperature won't rise above 50 °C.
on the other side, riding in mid-summer inside towns or with full throttle on motorway oil temperature will easily reach 120°C.
best regards

I had a Bultaco sherpa that would sometimes start backwards with hilarious results.
Nothing to do with your post sorry, but made me chuckle

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
