More Xt600 Swingarm Fun!
Are there any good folks out there who know where there are some Photos of a swingarm coming apart? so I know what I am lookin for.. the line drawing of the exploded diagram doesnt make a lot of sense to me.
I am a bit wary of pulling mine apart for 2 or 3 reasons........
1) I have never worked on a Monoshock before and the exploded diagram of the swingarm and monoshock system i have off the Web looks frightening! how many bits are there ?????
2) it has 15mm of vertical 'play' and 10-12mm of side to side 'play'
would 'giving it a damn good grease up' sort it out or would that just make it messier to strip?
3) on another thread someone mentioned using a 10 ton press to install bushings n stuff...... can it be done without?
Cheers

No panic, everything is pretty logical. Indeed a lot of parts but if you follow the dashed lines for sequence of assembly you wil be allright.

Vertical play: see other posts. Side play: caused by worn 'main bearings', the ones that the arm itself tirns around. Just replace these, no press required, just hammer and punch. There are aftermarket revision kits available.
Btw: a good grease does not help ...
3) on another thread someone mentioned using a 10 ton press to install bushings n stuff...... can it be done without?
I proposed that just to make a modification ... don't worry.
Cheers

Thank you.
Thanks for the Info Auke.... i was really worried at the thought of stripping it down. it all started as a routine make a new sidestand and replace chain and sprockets........ i
NOW my bike is on a stand minus front end and has had Headstock bearings replaced, front wheel bearings to be done, the list seems endless..... it seems that every time i remove some part, i find another part that needs replacing or im not happy with. ( for instance the rubber boot on the monoshock that fits on the swingarm.....exspensive! then there's these bearings for the swingarm...)
ITS GONNA END AS A FULL REBUILD I JUST KNOW IT.....LOL

Fear not! Check out the following link for a (relative) layman's guide to bike-spannering. It's always handy to develop these skills and gets you involved with your bike (don't tell the wife, mind, she'll get jealous ).

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
