You may have problems crossing certain borders with that engine number issue.
It all sounds very fishy, and you don't want to be connected to any form of bike thievery whatsoever.

the v5 doc might not have an engine number on it anyway as the bike sounds like it was previously registered outside of the uk.
i have a couple of bikes that are grey imports and they are the same,
both bikes are completely legal and legitimate.

Caminando, I feel I must reply to your post, and absolutely agree with you regarding bike theft. However, without an engine number, there is no way I can verify if the engine is "fishy" or not. Given the chap had a valid registration document, and had owned the vehicle for over two years, I can only assume it's as legitimate as it's going to be.
As for border crossings, I'm not that adventurous off road, and certaintly not on a bike over 25 years old, and as a clincher, the border crossing between England & Wales is fairly easy these days!!
Anyway, back to the engine. I need help in identifying exactly which engine it such that I can get the correct ignition. It is gunmetal grey in colour, has a blanking plate where the kickstart is, has a blanking plate where the mechanical tacho drive is, and is fitted with the oil pipe bracket at this location. I do have some other spares that came with it including an engine protector which is tubular in grey and not like the 43f plate version. As said before, the barrell is a 3AJ00.
Does anybody have any ideas? If anyone does know, what CDI/rectifier/coil do I need? and does anybody need 43F spares of these as I have a complete set, unless of course they will work with whatever i've got.

Don't know if anyone's even remotely interested anymore, but after spending the evening looking at various wiring diagrams and the wires coming out of the motor, i'm now fairly convinced that the engine is a 3tb, in which case i've deduced that i now need to find a TCI to replace the CDI i'v got, together with the applicable rectifier. Can anybody help?

yes its a 3tb motor.went to wales a few years ago to do the cambrian rallye, i managed to sneak past the border gaurds while they were cleaning their guns

They have now removed my favourite sign on the Wales/England border (A449 near Monmouth):

As the Welsh were the original British, it seems a bit self-defeating.

CDI's
Sorry I'm late - the CDI's on the older XT's and the newer ones are identical in the sense of ignition mapping. What rests now is to find out whether the stator in the engine is one for TCI (3TB) or CDI. If it is the last, you can make the CDI /stator combination work. If not, consider to install a CDI suitable stator. You will probably have to change the alternator cover for that.
The beauty of the above solution being that you do not have to chnage the wiring loom from CDI to TCI ignition.
To identify stator: the TCI ignitions have one coil, the alternator, and one pickup (TCI owners please confirm). The CDI stators have an alternator coil (3 white wires), a charging coil for the ignition (red and brown wires coming out) and two pickup coils (three wires coming out).
