I had the same with a 55W, same era bike. The regulator even came with a kind of polug in between to make it all fit. Has been working fine for years now.
Red and brown are both 12V from battery; the red one permanent, the brown one via main switch. Apparently the switched 12V is not needed anymore for RR functioning.
BTW, these RR need to 'see' a healthy battery before they start charging, so if your battery is entirely flat first replace / recharge, otherwise it will seem the RR is dead.
